Professionals from across the SEE region gathered on April 23rd to celebrate the leading commercial real estate companies, projects and professionals from SEE. Romania had particular news to celebrate with Baneasa Developments winning two prestigious awards at the fourth annual Europaproperty SEE Real Estate Awards for 2008, held at the SAS Radisson Hotel, Bucharest, Romania, and attended by over 300 industry professionals.
The development company won the Overall Project of the Year for its outstanding Baneasa Shopping City retail development in Bucharest and further evidence of Baneasa’s success was confirmed when their CEO Ali Ergun Ergen won Professional of the Year.
“This is a great honour. I’d like to thank our shareholders behind this investment and our team, but most of all thanks to UniCredit Tiriac Bank, one of Lenders who is present here tonight,” Baneasa’s Ali Ergun Ergen commented on collecting the awards.
The jury of 27 senior industry professionals active in the SEE region chose River Invest’s Sema Parc as the Office Project of the Year and the continued role of ProLogis in SEE was acknowledged with the jury choosing the ProLogis Park Bucharest A1 development as the best industrial development in 2008, for the second year running.
The biggest cheer of the night went to Mivan Development’s Liberty Center, which took away the Retail Project of the Year Award. “I’d like to thank the jury members for putting their faith in this project and, of course, all members of our team,” said Mivan’s Property Director Jonathan Houghton on picking up the award. He added, “Enjoy the party, it won’t be the last, the problems will ease, and we’ll all get back to work.”
Developer of the Year was Liebrecht & Wood while the Austrian investor Immoeast, which has had an interesting year, won the prize for Investor of the Year. UniCredit Tiriac Bank was presented with the prize for Bank of the Year. King Sturge, which was recognized for its regional work, was chosen as the Consultant/Letting Agent of the Year. Gardiner & Theobald won the Professional Service Provider of the Year prize, Chapman Taylor the Architectural Firm of the Year award and Wolf Theiss the Law Firm of the Year.
“We have put together a great team who has all contributed in making 2008 a good year for us in every way in the region,” said Wolf Theiss’ Managing Partner Bryan W. Jardine when accepting the award.
UniCredit’s Antonela Marchievici was voted Fidelity Title (Europe) Woman of the Year and Europolis was recognised for their work throughout the SEE region by walking away with the Overall Company of the Year Award.
The gala dinner was preceded by a series of panel discussions, sponsored by Ernst & Young, on the markets in Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia and Croatia. At the event, DTZ’s Regional Investment Director, Doug Hardman emphasised a reoccurring theme from the morning discussions that real opportunities exist now for players who are committed to the market; have been here for a long time and really understand the region’s current market fundamentals.
“You cannot generalise about the countries in the region, they have different languages, different legal systems and different economies, and all of these economies are entering the current down-turn at different phases. The opportunities will be here for the players who take the time and efforts to understand our markets to find value. I’m not saying there is no risk. I’m not saying that we’re OK, but what I’m saying is that there are opportunities,” he said.
Europaproperty would like to thank all participants at the event and congratulate the winners. With increasing development activity in SEE, the 2009 event will be even more exciting.
